Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a popular protocol for network management. It is used for collecting information from and configuring network devices such as servers, printers, hubs, switches, and routers on an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

Large networks with hundreds or even thousands of nodes are difficult to manage without a large staff to monitor every computer. As I was looking back on some of the Switch Sense posts and training some new employees here at Transition Networks I was reminded of how many acronyms and interpretations there are for standards and features that are related to Ethernet switches.

Most of us take these terms for granted, but when talking to people you often uncover people using two different meanings or interpretations for the same feature. With that in mind I thought it would be great to put together a simple glossary with Ethernet switch terminology that tells what the feature is, if it is known as something else, if it is an IEEE or RFC standard along with a simple description. continue »

More and more products are being released with single mode single fiber optics and can be perceived as being very expensive, but are they?

What is single mode single fiber?
The answer is that it is possible to transmit and receive using one strand of single mode fiber. This is achieved by using two different wavelengths - one end will transmit at 1550 and will receive at 1310 and vice versa for the other end. By using these wavelengths the signals will never collide.
